More than the precision assembly and firing capabilities, the early production National Match rifle had few identifying features to distinguish it from the standard M1 other than its precision assembly and shooting capability. Parts guns and forgeries have become commonplace in Northern Match parts, as well as the high price placed on the rifles. By 1959, production of new M1 rifles had been phased out, and all subsequent M1NM's were made by either rebuilding existing rifles or using parts stock on hand. The M1 rifle was first used in competition shooting in the Marine Corps Pacific Division Match held in Pearl Harbor on February 26-27, 1946, and by the spring of 1948 to ensure accuracy in the M1 rifle as a potential replacement for the '03 Springfield in the National Matches.
